About Me
Emily Miao, Ph.D., is a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP, a Chicago-based intellectual property law boutique. Dr. Miao has counseled many entrepreneurs, companies, and universities in protecting and licensing intellectual property rights. She has broad experience in all aspects of intellectual property practice, including patent and trademark procurement and portfolio management; client counseling on validity, infringement, freedom-to-operate (FTO), due diligence reviews and patent strategy matters; and licensing/secrecy agreements. Dr. Miao has received her Ph.D. degree from New York University, and her J.D. degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. She has also a post-doctoral research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A frequently-requested panelist, Dr. Miao recently spoke at the Arizona State University 2008 Strategic Alliance workshop on issues relating to intellectual property protection for start-up companies applying for SBIR/STTR grants. Dr. Miao also participated in the panel on "Analysis of a Technology License Agreement" at Patent Law Institute's 2008 Advanced Licensing Agreements conference. She has served as a judge at the 2007 and 2008 Northwestern University’s Venture Challenge and is a member of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Chicago and Midwest Entrepreneurs’ Forum. Dr. Miao has recently published an article entitled “Due Diligence Review in Patent Licensing Transactions” in The Licensing Journal, Vol. 27 (10), November/December 2007.
