Quick Guide to Letter Opening Equipment
Although many companies have some sort of postal meter to help make outgoing mail a quicker operation, many companies have not looked into equipment to handle their incoming mail. There are many different types of equipment that can create more ease when it comes to opening mail from hand held devices to desk top equipment that are capable of handling hundreds of letters per minute. Obviously it is important to look at the individual needs of your company, there is most likely some type of letter opener equipment able to help make your mail a more efficient process.
Types of Letter Openers
For letter opening equipment there are two types, a chadder and a slitter. The chadder simply cuts off 1/8th of an inch from the top of the envelope. Less expensive than the slitter, these forms of equipment can create a risk that comes along with the savings. Since they do not determine the location of the contents within the envelope, the chadder may damage the contents of the envelope.
The slitter is more precise than the chadder. It cuts the envelope along the top seam allowing for a more dependable piece of equipment when the contained documents may be important to the outcome of you business. Slitters are definitely not a piece of equipment to get if not needed as they can cost up $2,000 more than a comparable chadder.
As there is a risk of content destruction using the more utilized chadder style of mail opening equipment, there are additional features to help reduce this risk. A jogger can be used to help settle the contents at the bottom of the envelope. This piece of equipment can be essential for companies that receive large numbers of checks in the mail, or other important documents where the information cannot be compromised.
Some additional features can include an automated feeder to help ease the process further. This addition allows for the mail to be automatically placed into the opener with some form of conveyer allowing for even less supervision over the equipment. Also, a counter can be added to the machine to monitor mail volume. This counter can simply count the mail coming in or more advanced models also can place the date and time on the mail for more refined monitoring.
